Melba G. Caballero

Melba G. Caballero, 90, of McAllen, Texas, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a long and meaningful life filled with love, family, and faith. She was born in Red Gate, Texas, on October 2, 1935, to Alfredo Gonzalez and Rebecca O. Cavazos, who instilled in her the values of hard work and a deep devotion to her Catholic faith. Faith was the foundation of Melba’s life. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church for more than 60 years, faithfully attending Mass, participating in church events, and deepening her understanding of Christ’s teachings. Daily prayer was a source of strength throughout her life, and she lived her faith through kindness, fairness, and service to others. Melba grew up in Raymondville, Texas, where her mother owned and operated a small grocery store. She graduated from Raymondville High School in the spring of 1954. On October 17, 1954, she married Daniel Caballero of Raymondville, whom she loved and cherished throughout their 54 years of marriage. In 1966, they moved to McAllen, Texas, where Melba worked for the City of McAllen Public Utilities for 30 years before retiring in 1996. To her family, “Granny” was a beautiful and elegant woman who was a steady source of wisdom and strength. She shared her life experiences openly, and her stories always carried lessons about life, love, and family. Her home was forever open to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom she lovingly fed (even when they insisted they weren’t hungry). Melba was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Daniel Caballero, and her parents, Alfredo Gonzalez and Rebecca O. Cavazos. She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Dave) Reyna of McAllen, Texas; her son, Mario L. (Lourdes) Caballero of McAllen, Texas; three grandsons, Danny (Jamie) Caballero of East Lansing, Michigan, Tommy Caballero of McAllen, Texas, and Dominic Caballero of McAllen, Texas; two granddaughters, Celina (Victor) Romero of San Antonio, Texas, and Rebecca (Gilbert) Torres of Temple, Texas; and ten great-grandchildren: Isabella Resendez, Daniel Resendez, Alex Resendez, and Xavier Romero of San Antonio, Texas; Juniper Caballero, Evelyn Caballero, and Olivia Caballero of East Lansing, Michigan; Elias Torres and Nicolas Torres of Temple, Texas; and Anna Rae Caballero of McAllen, Texas. Visitation will take place at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen on Thursday, January 15, 2026 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a 7:00pm Rosary. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00am on Friday, January 16, 2026 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at 1:00pm at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission. The family is in the care of Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen.
