Hermila Anzaldua

My sister Hermila Anzaldua, daughter of Enrique D. Anzaldua and Glafira G. Anzaldua passed away on the morning of May 26, 2024, in the comfort of her home with her family at her side. The greater part of her family: Mother and Dad, sister Carmen (Felix) and brothers Fausto (Edna) and Andy (Alicia) have already passed away. Surviving her are numerous nieces and nephews, as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews, too many to mention. Olivia Delgado, Hermila’s grand-niece, expresses herself most eloquently: “My great aunt, Sweetie, was the type of person whose legacy touched everyone around her. I will cherish the fun memories of going to the movies to see the King’s Speech with her, and the TV show West Wing, which she enjoyed watching. I’ll remember the yogurt days and university visits. I’ll imagine her early years in Washington, D.C., and every dream she accomplished. I’ll think of the family dinners; the car rides from elementary school and our wonderful conversations. Whenever I lose my footing I’ll think of her strength and how it overflowed into empathy. She was one of the greats, building a life around giving- the best godmother anyone could have! This life feels empty without her and I’ll carry her with me always. I’ll be sure to “walk like Mrs. Onassis,” Sweetie. I’ll try my hardest to honor you and move through this life like you.” Prior to Hermila beginning her career in social work, she was a member of Congressman Lloyd M. Bentsen’s staff in Washington D.C. Soon after, Hermila walked the halls of Pan American College, Our Lady of the Lake University, and Pan American University, leaving an outstanding imprint, soon recognized by her university superiors as someone that would be creator of the Social Work Program at Pan American University in Edinburg, TX. Awards in recognition of her many achievements include the title of Professor Emeritus from the Department of Social Work as well as being named Master Professor by faculty and UTPA Alumni Association. My dear sister, I give you St. Paul in his letter to Timothy, words befitting you: “I have competed well;- I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” (2 Tm 4:7) This can be applied to my sister as she leaves us. My sister’s caregivers, my daughters Carmen Barajas, Rosa Delgado, and Anna G. Stanley, and I express our profound gratitude to her doctors in attendance, to Medical Innovations Home Health, and to the wonderful, gentle professionals that attended to Hermila in the last chapter in her life, as well as to the medical teams from Amavi Hospice. - Isaura Garcia Private Services were held.
