Alicia Peña Castañeda August 12,1931 - November 26,2021 With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Alicia our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She left us while peacefully sleeping in her residence in McAllen, TX, in her 90th year. Born in Rio Grande City, Texas, Alicia was raised and lived in Delmita, Texas until her marriage to her beloved “Lupe”. Preceded by her devoted husband, Guadalupe M. Castañeda Jr., her parents Niceforo and Eulalia Peña, and brother Noel Pena. Alicia was the beloved mother of Maria Gilda Castañeda, proud grandmother of Juli Ann, (Ramiro Lopez Jr.), David Michael Saenz, doting great grandmother of Lucia and Aria Lopez, and sister of Evelia Peña Raymond. Alicia lived a full life as a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and dedicated educator throughout Starr County. She began her educational career with the San Isidro school district, and went on to teach in Roma I.S.D., and Rio Grande City I.S.D. until retiring after a rewarding 32 years in 1990. Alicia completed her grade school education, in San Isidro and continued to receive her bachelor’s degree in Education, minoring in Art from Texas A & I University in Kingsville. Alicia was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 50 years. She was also a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City. Alicia loved to travel, cook, garden, shop, play slot machines and spend time with her family. Alicia had a passion for flowers as she was well known to be the “lady with the flower”, “la viejita de la flor.” Alicia loved to travel and go on cruises. This brought so much joy to Alicia and Lupe as they were able to experience majestic sites throughout the United States, Mexico, and surrounding islands. She also spoke about her memorable times visiting foreign countries, such as Spain, China and Yugoslavia. Alicia’s loving and caring personality created many friendships that lasted a lifetime. Many of these friends became family and she will be greatly missed by them. Alicia and Lupe were blessed with 59 wonderful years of marriage. After his passing a part of her heart went with him. She never stopped thinking of her beloved Lupe and we rejoice in knowing they are happily reunited in their glorified bodies, dancing in the kingdom of God. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. with a speech commencement at 6:00 P.M. and rosary at 7:00 P.M. at Kreidler Funeral Home, McAllen, TX. Mass service will be held on Saturday December 4, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at Immaculate Conception Church, Rio Grande City, TX. Burial will follow at the Rio Grande City Cemetery. Pallbearers: Ramiro Lopez Jr., David Saenz, Richard E. Raymond, Jorge Peña, Octavio Castañeda, and Juan B. Farias Sr. Honorary: Gabriel C. Raymond, Fernando De Huera and Marco Longoria.
