Thelma Ruth Spice Mason was born on June 20, 1925 to Ernest William Spice and Mae Ethel Barber Spice in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Glenville High School in Cleveland in 1943. She fell in love with the soldier she corresponded with, and married Donald Jack Mason on September 28, 1946 who preceded her in death (September 2004). They had 4 children: Cynthia Sue Mason (Douglas Alan Young) of McAllen, Texas, the late Robert Ray Mason of Elyria, Donald Jack Mason, Jr. of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Mark Allen Mason, ret. US Navy also of McAllen, Texas. All four children served in the military. She was grandmother to 8, and great grandmother to 17. She was preceded in death also by her parents and all 7 older siblings. She is survived by her 2 younger brothers, Floyd Gilbert Spice (Judith) and Donald Roy Spice (Ann Marie), both of Twinsburg, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews across the country. Mrs. Mason lived in Elyria from her marriage in 1946 until 2010 when she moved to McAllen. She was active at Calvary Baptist Church in Elyria, and attended St. Peter & St. Paul Episcopal Church in Mission, Texas. She loved dolls, building some from porcelain head, hands and feet, as well as making all manner of Barbie doll clothing. She crocheted, knitted, tatted lace, macraméd, did decoupage, made clothes, and delighted in teaching others these crafts. An avid reader, she kept a lifelong-reading list, and walked to the Elyria Public Library several times per month. She participated in Elyria's 'Active People' program at Eastern Heights Rec Center from 1968 until she moved to Texas. She died in her sleep on March 17, 2016, and will be missed by everyone who knew her.
