John J. “Jack” Lyons, our wonderful husband, brother, friend, uncle, brother in law, son in law, Jack Lyons finished life’s journey on November 2, 2016 at Alfredo Gonzalez Texas Veterans Home. He was from San Juan, Texas. Jack was born in Manhattan, NY on August 11. 1937 to parents John J. Lyons and Elizabeth Lee Lyons, both deceased. Enjoying life in Brooklyn where he was raised, Jack received his Vietnam draft notice and entered military service August 9, 1963. He swore to leave military service as soon as he could. He surprised himself by retiring from the Army August 31, 1984, completing 21 years of service. Jack served his country proudly as an Honor Guard with the 3rd Infantry (The Old Guard) and Veterinary Food Inspector. During his military career, he was stationed at Ft. Myer, VA, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, Ft. MacArthur, CA, Bangkok, Thailand, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Chicago, IL, and USA Natick Research Development Command, Natick, MA. He received several military and civilian awards. Jack also worked for the Daily News in NYC and as a USDA Commodity Grader in Weslaco, Texas retiring from Federal Service in 2004. Afterwards, he enjoyed retirement tremendously! Jack’s varied interests included, golf, bowling, snow skiing, ice skating, swimming, reading, crossword puzzles, and cooking He was a fantastic cook and for many years prepared delicious Thanksgiving Dinners for us, his family. Jack belonged to the American Legion Post 0107, Natick, MA, The VFW Sherman, Texas, The DAV Sherman, Texas and the Army Retired Enlisted Veterinary Personnel Schertz, Texas. Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Marta, Lujan., Four sisters, Mary Lo Preto, (Pembroke Pines, FL.), Betty Mulane Duffy, (Breeze Point, NY), Jane Lyons, (Manhattan, NY) and Rita (Robert) Debonis (Brooklyn, NY). His Lujan family, Josefina Lujan, his mother in law (Alamo, Texas); Jose Luis (Judy), (Austin, Texas), Estela (Louis) Flores, (Austin, Texas), Graciela (Virgilio) Hernandez, (McAllen, Texas), Joel (Darla), (Elgin, Texas), and Raquel (Robert) Reyes, (Pflugerville. Texas), beloved nephew, Juan Manuel Guevara, (Austin, Texas). He will be missed by many nephews and nieces, whom he loved very much. Jack is also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Lyons, brother in laws: Joe Lo Preto, Joseph Mullane, John Duffy and nephew Joseph Mullane. A tribute to Jack from his nephew Victor Lo Preto and wife Cindy: You have been a wonderful example to us. Your sense of humor, love of family, faith, honesty, joy for life and especially the many ways you have shown all of us your love; whether helping others through difficult times or making us feel special, you have given us a piece of you! So true! That was our Jack. We will always love you, hold you close to our hearts, and cherish your memory forever. Jack, I want you to know how proud I am of you. Your sense of humor was shared until the end and you never lost your Irish Feistiness. Rest in peace, my lovely husband, Marta. Visitation will be this evening from 6 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service to be held at Kreidler Funeral Home, Inc. on N. 10th St. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 9:30 AM at Kreidler Funeral Home. Inc. on N. 10th St. Burial will follow at 11 AM at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 S. Inspiration Road, Mission, Texas 78572.
