Gary Lester Griffith, 82, died peacefully Friday, August 17, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Lois Hoffower Griffith, his brother Jerry (Sandra) Griffith - College Station, three children - Leslie (Don) Pemelton- McAllen, Kenneth (Jennifer) Griffith- McAllen, Rebecca (Bubba) Angel - McAllen, eight grandchildren -Sarah Pemelton-McAllen, Ryan (Alexis) Pemelton - McAllen, Matthew (Haley) Pemelton - Midland, Baylee Hopper - San Antonio, Austin Griffith - San Antonio, Ben Griffith- San Marcos, Brehannah Hopper - San Antonio and Sydney Pemelton - College Station, great granddaughter - Lily Kowalski- McAllen, brothers-in-law Raymond (Bonnie) Hoffower - Gresham, OR and Melvin (Rosemary) Hoffower - Harper, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents - Kenneth and Lida Griffith and his in-laws Robert and Sarah Hoffower. Gary was born in Louisiana and moved to Brownsville in 1950. He attended Brownsville High School where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball and was voted Outstanding Athlete both his Junior and Senior year. He was also selected as Most Handsome of his Senior class. Gary received a scholarship to play basketball at Texas A&M and later transferred to Texas A & I in Kingsville. He also played semi-professional baseball and was inducted into the Leo Najo Baseball Hall of Fame. Gary was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1959, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. When not serving others, he loved to spend time riding horses at the Lida Bell Ranch, designing handmade knives and hunting in Utah with his good friends Bobby Bell, Ken Stewart and John Larson. Gary had an entrepreneurial spirit beginning with opening a Humble/Enco gas station on Harvey and l0th in McAllen in the 1960's. His reputation of being an honest and generous business man continued throughout his life up until the time of his recent retirement, where he owned and operated, along with his son Ken and son-in-law Don, Griffith Transportation in Edinburg. He was a quiet, gentle, generous, loving man. OUR COWBOY will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 6-8 pm at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen with funeral services scheduled for Thursday August 23, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1600 Harvey Drive, McAllen at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Laurie P Andrews PAWS Center or Calvary Baptist Church. Gary's four grandsons will serve as pall bearers.
