McAllen – Cecilia Carmen Gutierrez, 78, passed away on February 14, 2017, surrounded by her family at McAllen Heart Hospital. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to many. Cecilia will long be remembered for the love she showed to everyone she met. Her smile touched your heart and her generosity was endless. Her life is celebrated by the love that remains in our hearts forever. She was born on January 2, 1939 to Leonelo and Cecilia Gonzalez. Her foundation of values was provided by her parents with a focus on community involvement and continued education. Cecilia was a volunteer with many organizations, including the Salvation Army, La Piedad Cemetery, Pan American Roundtable, Teacher Retirement Association, and The Texas Silvered Haired Legislature. Professionally, she was committed to children as an educator for over 35 years, including working at Region One Education Center where she was a “teacher of teachers” and co-authored Building Bridges, a curriculum dedicated to early childhood development. Cecilia was the rock of her family. Married over 56 years to Roberto Gutierrez from Mission, she raised her children with the same values her parents had shown her. Cecilia supported Roberto in his 14 years as State Representative of District 41; She was the embodiment of the saying, “alongside every successful man, is a strong woman.” She motivated and encouraged Roberto to expand education in the Rio Grande Valley, promote public safety for children and improve access to health services. Her involvement in his efforts helped create several bills and laws that remain effect today. She was an incredible role model, selfless and inspiring to all. The words of wisdom she gave to everyone she met will run deep within the community, and especially with her family. She will forever live on in our mind, body, and spirit. The seeds Cecilia laid will continue to grow in the family she so graciously loved and taught. Her grace and love will be forever our guide. Cecilia Gutierrez is survived by her loving husband, Roberto Gutierrez and their children, Robert (Kelly) Gutierrez, Gilda (Joel) Romero, and Sara (Mark) Gonzales. She is also survived by her sister Iris Pearce and brother, Romeo Gonzalez. Cecilia’s legacy will live on with her grandchildren including Roberto Daniel, Ana Cecilia, Iris Isabelle, Joel Roberto, Sarita Cecilia, Gabriela Marie, and Andrea Renee. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9pm with a 7pm rosary, today, February 17, 2017 at Kreidler Funeral Home, 314 N. 10th Street, McAllen. Funeral service will take place at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, 1108 West Hackberry Avenue, McAllen. Interment will follow at La Piedad Cemetery in McAllen.
