Velma Arce Gonzalez – Devoted Catholic, Loving and Faithful Wife, Beloved Mother, Cherished Sister, Supportive Aunt, and Treasured Friend. Velma’s unwavering faith and boundless love left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Velma O. Gonzalez, 72, of McAllen, Texas, entered eternal rest on April 30th, 2025, in her hometown of McAllen, reuniting with the love of her life, Eddie. She was born Velma Odilia Arce on September 2nd, 1952, in McAllen, Texas, to Josefina and Domingo Arce of Mission, Texas. Velma was the heart of her family—devoted to her loving husband, her children, and her extended family. As a wife, she was a true partner in every sense—steadfast, compassionate, and supportive. As a daughter, she honored her parents with deep love, respect, and constant care, always grounded in the values they instilled in her. As a sister, she was a lifelong confidante and encourager. As an aunt, she was cherished and influential—offering warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support to her nieces and nephews. Velma married Eddie Gonzalez in January 1974. Together, they spent 50 cherished years building a life filled with love, faith, and unforgettable memories while raising their three children: Veronica, Eduardo, and Armando. Their journey together was marked by deep devotion, shared joys, and a lasting bond that remains a testament to their enduring love . As a mother, Velma was the embodiment of grace and unconditional love—selfless, nurturing, and endlessly supportive. She raised her children with strength, compassion, and unwavering faith, always leading by example. Her gentle guidance, fierce loyalty, and heartfelt pride shaped the lives of those she held dearest. Velma attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School in Mission, Texas, and graduated from Mission High School in 1970. She continued her education at Pan American University. Early in her career, she worked at David’s Pharmacy in Mission, Texas, before settling in McAllen with Eddie to make it their lifelong home. She later worked for Texas State Bank and then found her true calling at Our Lady of Sorrows School in McAllen. Velma dedicated over 35 years to Our Lady of Sorrows School, where she served with love, integrity, and commitment. Her presence and contributions impacted generations of families. Beyond her professional role, she was a tireless parent volunteer and leader on numerous school and diocesan committees. She was a woman of deep faith, serving her church and community with grace and humility. A proud and active member of the Our Lady of Sorrows parish and the Diocese of Brownsville, Velma's kindness, service, and leadership touched countless lives. She was a founding member of the Diocese of Brownsville Spirit Awards Fundraising Committee, serving for over 28 years. Velma was honored with the Spirit Award twice—first, for her commitment to Our Lady of Sorrows School, and again in 2017 for her dedication to the Diocese of Brownsville. Velma found great joy in the simple pleasures of life—especially time spent outdoors with her loved ones. She cherished annual summer vacation with her family that included fishing and outdoor adventures with her father, brother, and sons, creating memories filled with laughter, storytelling, and quiet moments by the water. She loved being surrounded by friends and found deep connection and fulfillment in her weekly Bible Study Tuesday Dinners and Wednesday Afternoon Rosary Gatherings, where faith and friendship were beautifully intertwined. A curious spirit at heart, Velma also enjoyed discovering new cuisines and trying local dishes while traveling with her family—always eager to share those experiences over a good meal and warm conversation. Velma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward A. “Eddie” Gonzalez; her brother, Domingo “Mito” Arce, Jr.; her loving parents, Domingo and Josefina Arce and her best friend of many decades, Elodia “Lola” Ibarra. She is survived by her loving children: Veronica V. Gonzalez, Eduardo A. Gonzalez Jr., and Dr. Armando J. Gonzalez. She is also survived by her in-laws: Gloria Arce, Carlos V. Gonzalez Jr., Arnaldo and Dalinda Ramirez, Diana A. Gonzalez, and Laura Gonzalez, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who deeply loved her. The Gonzalez family expresses their sincere appreciation to all relatives and friends for the outpouring of support, prayers, and love during this difficult period. We extend a special thank you to Ambiance Florals & Rentals and Spark Paper Goods, along with the numerous loved ones who have supported us throughout this challenging time. Visitation will begin at 5:00pm on Thursday, May 8th 2025 at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen where a recitation of the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am on Friday, May 9th 2025 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in McAllen with Father Gregory T. Labus serving as celebrant. The interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen. Having the honor of serving as Pallbearers will be: Marcus Arce, Joseph Caruthers, Ryan Maza, Stephen Gonzalez, Nicholas Aitkens, Angel Garcia and Luis Pastor; Honorary Pallbearers will be: Arnaldo Ramirez, Jr., Arnaldo Ramirez, III., Xander Caruthers, Rudy Ruiz and Cristian Munoz. The family is in the care of Kreidler Funeral Home, Inc., of McAllen.
