Sergio Garcia Morales

Sergio Garcia Morales, 80, died on July 11, 2026, in McAllen, TX. He was a loving father and grandfather. Sergio, nicknamed Checo, was born on October 25, 1945 in Reynosa Tamaulipas, Mexico. He was a playful child who was often found causing mischief (including once breaking a window with his friends at his elementary school). Soon after elementary school, he spent middle school, high school and college in Monterrey, Mexico. It was a city that gave him a love of culture and brought him many friends. He attended La Universidad de Nuevo Leon and studied chemical engineering, graduating in 1969. There he gained lifelong friends that reunited annually. Famed stories from that time included a complaining older lady neighbor asking Checo to keep it down on Friday nights when he would call out “Viernes violentos!” After graduating, he moved to Mexico City, a city that brought him his career and the love of his life. He began working for Tuk as an engineer. He explored the city, eventually reuniting with a neighbor from his youth. Esther del Carmen de Gorordo was working as a young lawyer in Mexico City at the same time. Famously, when they were children and neighbors, Tete had harbored a crush on Checo, where she carried a trinket he gave her. Reunited in Mexico City, they started dating, and they soon became engaged. They married in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico on August 14, 1976. He worked for the family company and headed Mosaicos Reynosa. Eventually Checo and Tete moved to McAllen, Texas where they raised their four children. He commuted across the border each day. He was widowed in 1989, and took pride in raising his four children, never missing a Meet The Teacher Night, coaching little league, and making a home for them. Checo will be remembered as funny, intelligent, introspective, and generous. He was most proud of raising four children that were educated and had careers. He took pleasure in joking around with his cousins when they reunited for Moralada parties. On Sundays he would read El Norte, and once a month, he and his friends would gather on a Friday night to play dominoes. He was a voracious reader, and loved listening to The Beatles as much as Los Bukis, Vicki Carr, and Eydie Gormé. He loved traveling to see his children, revisiting Monterrey, conferences in Las Vegas, and taking tours in Europe. He loved baseball and never missed watching a World Series game from the comfort of his home. Checo will be remembered most as a father. He saw every success his children had as his. Every degree, every career success, every travel they took, all were cheered and celebrated. He was also endlessly proud of his six grandchildren who lit him up as he watched them grow. Now that Checo is gone, we will toast to his spirit with a vodka tonic – and then we will keep his memory alive by doing as he did: by being generous with our laughter and being curious of the world around us. Checo is predeceased by his parents Gustavo Garcia Garza and Minerva Morales Martinez as well as his wife, Esther del Carmen Garcia de Gorordo. He is survived by his children Sergio Garcia (Jessica), Alvaro Garcia (Nell), Esther Garcia (Lee), and Arantza Vela (Tommy); his grandchildren Sebastian Garcia, Noah Garcia, Joaquin Vela, Carolina Vela, Alvaro Garcia, and Rowan Garcia; his siblings, Carlos Garcia, Alvaro Garcia, Astrid Garcia, and Minerva Garcia; and a host of nieces and nephews. A Rosary will be prayed at 9:30am followed by at 10:00am Funeral Mass on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 in the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in McAllen.
