Mr. Philip James Vance

Philip James Vance, known to many as "Uncle Phil" peacefully passed away at his home in Alamo, Texas, on Sunday, May 28,2023. Phil was born April 6, 1937, in Brownsburg, Indiana, to Richard (Dick) and Helen Vance. ln 1949, Phil and his family moved to McAllen. Texas. He was the third of seven children. He graduated from PSJA High school in 1955. He attended and loved his time at Texas A&M university and being part of the Corp of Cadets. He graduated from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. He was enlisted in the Army Reserves from 1960-1966. In the fall of 1961, Phil went to work for Hartford Insurance Company at their offices in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. He then joined Kmart as Senior Vice President and was later transferred and resided in New Jersey until he moved back to the Rio Grande Valley in 1980. In 1985, he joined the Rioco Corporation and retired in 2015. Phil is survived by his wife, Linda Rosalie Garcia Vance; sisters, Carolyn Cook Landrum and Diane Vance Tomlin; brother, Richard (Bud) Erwin Vance; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and his dear friend, John Marr. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Richard (Dick) and Helen Vance; his brothers, Thomas Brandon Vance, Steven Douglas Vance and Charles Ray Vance; and his good friend, Mickey Cavazos. Phil loved his nieces and nephews playing his role as "Uncle Phil" and being a big part of their lives. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with family and friends. He loved reading novels about the Old West, the US Military and Spy Thrillers. He loved to travel and to learn and experience new things. Although he enjoyed his share of conservative radio, he was not judgmental appreciating differing perspectives and cultures. He had close friendships with people from different countries and different parts of the world. He also had the "Vance" temper. something he said he inherited from his father and shared by a few other family members, but you could ALWAYS count on Phil to listen to reason and cool down. He had a great sense of humor, an easy smile, and his laugh was contagious. He was sensitive, compassionate and had a generous heart. He was a man of faith, Uncle Phil will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral will be Friday, June 2, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church 312 North 9th Street Alamo, Texas 78516. Interment to follow at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen.
