Irene P. Lyssy

Irene Prukop Lyssy, 93, passed away October 6th, 2023, at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. Irene is preceded in death by her father and mother Frank and Gertrude (Maron) Prukop, her wonderful husband Ben Frank Lyssy, two of her children Margaret Rose Lyssy and Steven Frank Lyssy, her daughter-in-law Anita Petty Lyssy and her siblings Frank Prukop, Sophie Foley Matthew, Conrad Prukop, Phillip Prukop and Hedwig (Hattie) Kotara. Irene is survived by her brother Emil Prukop, her sister-in-law Mary Lyssy Moy, her children Dianne (David Kim) Taylor, Larry Lyssy and Sandra Lyssy and her grandson Kit (Magda) Taylor. Irene was born and raised in McCook, TX, where with her siblings helped on the family farm. She met the love of her life, Ben, also in McCook. They were married on November 15th, 1949, after Ben returned from serving in WWII. With Ben she left for the city lights of McAllen. She was able to stay home and raise five children. She was active parishioner of her church Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. She was a member of the Alter Society for many years and with her husband she was a part of the OLS Study Club. With the woman of the Church, she would organize a group to make a quilt each year for a raffle to raise money for the Church. Irene was an avid seamstress, she sewed most of her children’s clothes, especially the girls. She then continued into quilting using the scraps from the kid’s material to make quilts for her children and other lucky individuals. She was a wonderful cook and created awesome meals out of what she had in the frig and pantry. She loved gardening both vegetable and flowers, even to the end she was telling her kids what to do in the garden. Maybe she was not a world traveler, but she enjoyed going on road trips especially when the destination ended in seeing one of her children or a beloved relative. During her mother’s later years, she was her care giver along with her younger sister Hattie. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother, friend, and overall wonderful woman. We will miss her greatly!!! Visitation will the held from 5 to 8 pm Thursday October 19th with the Rosary at 7 pm at Kreidler Funeral Home. Funeral services will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel Friday October 20th at 10 am with burial to follow at Valley Memorial Gardens at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church’s Building Fund 1108 W. Hackberry Ave, McAllen, TX 78501.
